PIM Integration

Sync your Product Information Management system with Mercura CPQ. Product attributes, descriptions, and specifications maintained in your PIM flow automatically into configuration rules and quote outputs — no duplicate maintenance.

PIM owns product data — CPQ consumes it

The Challenge

Product Data Is Maintained Separately in PIM and CPQ

Manufacturers who operate a Product Information Management system face a recurring challenge: the product data in their PIM and the product data in their CPQ are separate, and keeping them synchronised requires manual effort that is rarely done consistently.

When product specifications change — a new material grade is approved, an option is discontinued, a technical attribute is updated — the change must be reflected in both the PIM and the CPQ independently. In practice, one system is updated promptly and the other lags. Customers receive quotes referencing attributes that the PIM no longer shows as current.

The duplication of product data maintenance is a source of unnecessary operational cost. Product managers who maintain the PIM should not also need to maintain a parallel version of the same data in the CPQ. But without integration, there is no alternative.

For manufacturers launching new products, the PIM-CPQ gap creates a synchronisation problem at launch: is the PIM the source of truth, or the CPQ? Without a clear integration, both become partially correct — and the combined result is neither fully reliable.

How It Works

How PIM Integration Works in Mercura

Mercura's PIM integration establishes a directional data flow from your PIM system — Akeneo, Salsify, inriver, Contentserv, or others — into the Mercura product model. Product attributes defined in the PIM — dimensions, materials, certifications, descriptions, and technical specifications — are mapped to the corresponding fields in Mercura's configuration engine and quote templates. When an attribute is updated in the PIM, the change propagates to Mercura automatically on a configured sync schedule or via webhook on change event. New products added to the PIM appear in Mercura's configuration catalog without manual entry. The PIM is the single source of truth for product data; Mercura consumes that data for configuration logic and quote output.

What's Included

Key Capabilities

  • Bi-directional or PIM-to-CPQ directional integration with major PIM platforms
  • Attribute mapping — PIM fields mapped to Mercura configuration attributes
  • Automatic sync on product attribute change in PIM
  • New product detection — products added in PIM appear in Mercura automatically
  • Product lifecycle status sync — discontinued products removed from CPQ automatically
  • Rich product content from PIM used in quote templates and customer-facing output
  • Conflict detection — sync errors surfaced for administrator review
  • Custom field support for manufacturer-specific PIM attributes

The Difference

Before and After PIM Integration

Without PIM Integration
  • Product data maintained separately in PIM and CPQ — duplication effort
  • PIM and CPQ frequently out of sync — outdated attributes in quotes
  • New product launches require parallel setup in both systems
  • Discontinued products require manual removal from CPQ
  • Product managers maintain two systems — efficiency and accuracy both reduced
With Mercura
  • Product data maintained once in PIM — Mercura synchronises automatically
  • CPQ always reflects current PIM data — quotes always reference accurate attributes
  • New products flow from PIM to CPQ without additional setup
  • Discontinued products removed from CPQ when archived in PIM
  • Product managers maintain one system — CPQ accuracy maintained automatically

Real-World Application

Example Use Case: Electronics Components Manufacturer

An electronics components manufacturer managed over 4,000 active SKUs in Akeneo, their PIM platform. Each SKU had 30–40 technical attributes relevant to product selection and configuration. Their CPQ system maintained a separate copy of these attributes that was updated quarterly by a data administrator — a process that took approximately 40 hours per quarter and still left the CPQ 6–12 weeks behind the PIM. After implementing Mercura's Akeneo integration, attribute updates in Akeneo propagated to Mercura within 15 minutes via webhook. New SKUs appeared in the CPQ within the same business day they were published in the PIM. The quarterly data administration process was eliminated entirely. Quote accuracy on technical attributes improved immediately, and two customer complaints about outdated specifications in quotes — previously a recurring issue — did not recur in the 18 months following integration.

Quote turnaround dropped from 3 days to under 4 hours.

Business Impact

Why PIM Integration Matters

PIM integration eliminates one of the most persistent and costly data management problems in the CPQ ecosystem: the divergence of product data between the system that manages it (PIM) and the system that sells it (CPQ). When these systems are connected, product data quality is automatically maintained in the commercial workflow — without additional effort, without synchronisation lag, and without the accuracy risk that comes from maintaining two independent copies of the same data.
