Audit Logs
Every action in your CPQ system is captured in a structured, tamper-evident audit log. Know who did what, when, and why — across configurations, pricing, quotes, and approvals.

The Challenge
CPQ Activity Is Untracked and Untraceable
When a pricing error, a configuration mistake, or an unauthorised discount is discovered, the first question is: who made this change and when? Without structured audit logging, answering this question requires interviewing people, searching email threads, and examining database records — a process that takes days and frequently produces incomplete answers.
Without audit logs, it is also impossible to demonstrate to external auditors, customers, or regulators that a CPQ process operated as designed. Claims that a review was conducted, an approval was obtained, or a specific price was current on a specific date cannot be verified.
Commercial disputes — a customer claiming the price they were quoted differs from the price on their invoice, or a margin variance investigation — require precise documentation of what was in the system at a specific point in time. Without audit logs, this evidence does not exist.
The absence of audit logging also creates an environment where accountability is reduced — people are less careful with changes when there is no record of who made them.
How It Works
How Audit Logging Works in Mercura
Mercura captures a structured log record for every action performed in the CPQ system — product catalog changes, configuration rule modifications, pricing updates, quote creation and revision, approval decisions, user access events, and API calls. Each log entry includes the actor identity, timestamp, action type, affected object identifier, previous value, and new value where applicable. Log records are written to an append-only store and are not modifiable by any user including system administrators — ensuring tamper-evidence. Logs are searchable by actor, object, date range, and action type. Exports in structured formats are available for external audit workflows or SIEM integration.
What's Included
Key Capabilities
- Complete activity logging across all CPQ objects — configurations, pricing, quotes, approvals
- Tamper-evident append-only log store — records cannot be modified or deleted
- Structured log entries with actor, timestamp, action, object, before/after values
- Full-text and filtered search across the entire log history
- Date-range exports for external audit workflows
- Real-time log streaming to SIEM or log management platforms
- Per-user activity reports for access review and compliance reporting
- Long-term log retention with configurable retention periods
The Difference
Before and After Audit Logging
- Pricing and configuration errors untraceable — investigation slow and incomplete
- Compliance evidence unavailable — external audits find process documentation gaps
- Commercial disputes unresolvable without documentation of historical system state
- No accountability for changes — careless modifications go undetected
- Regulatory reporting on system activity requires manual compilation
- Any change traceable in seconds — who made it, when, and what it was
- Compliance evidence generated automatically — every action documented
- Commercial disputes resolved with precise historical system state documentation
- Full accountability — every action attributed, no anonymous changes possible
- Regulatory reporting produced directly from structured log exports
Real-World Application
Example Use Case: Industrial Equipment Distributor
An industrial equipment distributor faced a commercial dispute with a major customer who claimed they had been invoiced at a higher price than the rate agreed in their contract. The distributor's sales team had no record of what the system had quoted, and the customer was threatening to withhold payment pending resolution. Using Mercura's audit log, the sales operations team retrieved the exact quote record, including the pricing calculation that applied the correct contract rate, the timestamp of the quote, and the user account that generated it. The complete audit evidence was shared with the customer within 15 minutes of the dispute being raised. The dispute was resolved within 24 hours — without escalation to legal.
Quote turnaround dropped from 3 days to under 4 hours.
Business Impact
Why Audit Logs Matter
Audit logs are the foundation of operational accountability and compliance readiness in a CPQ system. They transform a system where change history is speculative into one where it is precise and verifiable. For manufacturers operating in regulated industries, selling under complex contract structures, or managing large teams with CPQ access, comprehensive audit logging is not a feature — it is a requirement that becomes apparent the moment it is missing.
